The Taylor series of a function (that is infinitely differentiable) $f$ is the infinite series

$$\sum_{n=0}^\infty \frac{f^{(n)}(a)}{n!}(x-a)^n.$$

Expanding the sum a certain number of terms is often done to approximate $f$ as a polynomial of a certain order.
